AN INTERVIEW WITH
Underwater Africa’s director
Based at Tofo Beach, Mozambique, Underwater Africa are a conservation organisation that works with
volunteers and academics to study the indigenous aquatic species and educate local communities and
the government on how to protect their marine wildlife. Their director Graeme Warrack spoke to us about
the research they are currently conducting and what it’s like to volunteer for them. We also spoke to PhD
student Calum Murie about how Underwater Africa are assisting him with his study of the region’s sharks
and rays to identify the diversity and abundance of these elasmobranchs, and provide an understanding of
their behavioural patterns.
