My first teaching job in Spain was in the small city of Caceres,
in the middle of Extremadura, which is a rural, quiet and not
too wealthy area of Spain. It offered the perfect introductory
experience to Spanish living – plenty of small squares, cute
streets and cheap restaurants. However, after a recent move
to Valencia, I have discovered that the larger cities in Spain
can offer a completely different experience. Valencia is the
third largest city in Spain yet is one of the most popular
student cities. The exciting thing about life in Valencia is
that it really isn’t any more expensive than living in a small
city but has every possible advantage of larger city living.
Some of the things you could miss in Caceres are well-
connected public transport, an international music venue,
large sport stadiums and generally variety, all of which
you can find in Valencia. There is variety in everything and
anything. Instead of one cheap restaurant people love,
there are 10. If you feel like going to a jazz, piano, rock,
pop and salsa club all in one night, there is something for
everyone, but at the same cheap prices as the smaller cities.
