What other skills and personal
development does the programme
offer to students taking part?
Powerful Youth’s Global Leadership Academies
are focused on building three major areas of
personal development within youth ages 12-18:
Confidence, Leadership Soft Skills, and Global
Perspective.
Build Confidence:
Whether it’s completing a 20-metre-
high obstacle course, volunteering at local charity,
making new friends, or designing their own passion
inspired DREAM service project, our participant’s will
build self-confidence through close guidance, positive
reinforcement and coaching from our highly trained
and qualified staff seeking to expand each participant’s
comfort zone.
Leadership Soft Skills:
Developing leadership
soft skills – such as communication, teamwork
and critical thinking – is a lot like getting better at
swimming. You don’t get better from reading books
or traditional classroom learning. Instead, to learn
effective leadership participants must see, do, learn
and review their behaviour after each activity –
guided by our staff and capturing their understanding
using a digital learning platform. In special partnership
with Brookes Education Group and other Powerful
Youth Partner Schools, our expert staff come from
around the globe with decades of youth and leadership
training expertise to help youth to uncover their
passion, lead with purpose and develop their own
leadership identity.
Global Perspective:
Meeting new people from
different cultures can be both exhilarating and
challenging at the same time but having fun and
accepting each other’s perspective is absolutely
critical for any leader. In previous years, participants
have taken part from more than 17 countries and
many still keep in touch to this day. Participant’s
come to learn about how to effectively lead others,
but in the process, learn to better lead themselves and
change within their communities. Youth will actively
engage in 50+ hours of service learning throughout
the programme, to demonstrate their leadership
abilities as a tool to create measurable social and
global impact.
What support does GLA offer to its
students post-completion?
Upon completion of the programme, all graduates
are eligible to receive one-to-one coaching sessions
online (e.g. Skype, WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat, etc.) once
a month for up to six months. The coaching sessions
are all scheduled by the students themselves through
an international scheduling app that we email out
to students. We discuss this coaching process during
the programme and it is led by a senior staff member
supported by myself and some of the other senior
leadership coaches.
The goal is to help keep the positive momentum that
students have built as a leader and to help encourage
and problem solve issues they may have run into
when they return home and start their DREAM Service
Projects (we have some sample videos of dream
projects here: https://youtu.be/mbITywOA7d8 ).
We also provide an on-going combination of
summer employment opportunities to former
graduates, university scholarships, and university
recommendation letters and as a means of supporting
our network.
