In 1985, York University English Language Institute
(YUELI) opened as a small language training centre,
meeting the needs of a handful of students wanting to
improve their English skills. Almost 35 years later, the
institute is one of the largest language training centres
in Canada, accepting around 3,000 student registrations
from approximately 50 different countries, allowing
students from around the world to redefine their futures.
There is a variety of programmes on offer at the institute,
such as YUBridge, which allows students to complete
their English language qualifications alongside an
undergraduate degree. During this eight month period,
students learn to speak and write at an IELTS 6.5 level,
whilst earning nine credits towards their degree course.
There are also master’s degree preparation courses and
graduate school language pathways, alongside a four
week summer immersion program for those considering
joining the institute.
