The University of Victoria’s English Language Centre
(“ELC”) in Canada offers award-winning programmes
for academic, general and professional purposes.
Since opening in 1970, the ELC has distinguished itself
as an expert in the field of English language training,
focusing on student success and support. Programmes
range from 20 study hours a week to 30 study hours a
week, for a more intensive learning experience. As well
as the option to add different industry workshops such
as public speaking or business communication skills,
students are able to take part in a specialised first year
of their UVic undergraduate degree. The University
Pathways Programme combines academic English
with UVic credit courses, offering a unique opportunity
for international students to gain confidence in their
academic English language skills while attending
UVic classes in either the “Science and Engineering” or
“Canadian Career” streams.
Dedicated administrative staff, instructors and Cultural
Assistants work together to create a supportive and fun
environment for ELC students, encouraging them to
take part in a range of activities outside the classroom.
With options such as kayaking, rock-climbing, whale
watching, excursions to Vancouver and many more,
students are immersed in lively Canadian culture.
Cultural Assistants
The ELC has a team of friendly Cultural Assistants that
go above and beyond to ensure students live life to the
fullest for the duration of the programme. They give
friendly advice and support to all students whilst also
organising field trips, coffee socials, workshops, and
even the occasional flash mob to keep ELC students
having fun. Cultural Assistants also provide valuable
‘real Canadian’ conversation practice every day, as ELC
students are encouraged to practice their speaking
skills with the Cultural Assistants as a continuation to
their learning experience.
