THE TORONTO CONNECTION
The word “Toronto” comes from the Mohawk phrase “tkaronto” which means “where
trees grow in water” (Canadian Blog House).
The official motto of the City of Toronto is “Diversity Our Strength” (Toronto
Global).
Toronto’s population consists of 51% of residents born outside of Canada and is home
to over 230 nationalities (Toronto Foundation).
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) welcomed 106,000 immigrants in 2018, which is more than
seven-times that of other Canadian provinces combined (Conference Board of Canada).
Toronto is ranked as one of the “Best Student Cities” in the world, with outstanding scores
in all six categories: student mix, desirability, employer activity, affordability and student
view (QS Quacquarelli Symonds Best Student Cities 2018 Index).
York University was founded in 1959 and is the third
largest university in Canada with 11 faculties and over
200 academic programmes. The institution is home
to over 49,700 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate
students, including 8,500 international students from
178 countries. York University has recently set an
internationalisation target to increase the international
student demographic to 20-25% of the university’s
total student body from the current 15.3%. Toronto is
one of the most multicultural cities in the world: just
over half of its population are born outside of Canada.
Garcia-Sitton remarks that “the city prides itself on its
openness, inclusivity and multiculturalism – all values
that we hold dearly at YUELI.”
At present, Toronto is exceptionally well-positioned as a
study abroad destination. Being the largest metropolis in
Canada, Toronto offers a range of experiences to visitors,
immigrants and residents alike that remains unmatched
anywhere else in Canada, from international cuisine to
sporting events, to the arts, entertainment and nightlife.
The global influence of the city and its institutions also
cannot be overlooked—in April 2019, York University was
ranked 26th in the world in the Times Higher Education
Impact Rankings, which highlights the ways in which

the education sector contributes to international
efforts to build a more socially, economically, and
environmentally sustainable world. Despite its location
in the biggest urban sprawl in Canada, York University
is very convenient for commuters from all parts of
Toronto and nearby suburbs because of its modern
transportation systems such as its own Toronto Transit
Commission (TTC) subway stations.
