YUELI’s Student-centred Approach
YUELI is committed to providing students the best
learning experience possible. Students are encouraged
to participate in the university’s extracurricular
activities, which include over 350 student clubs, 13
newspapers and 36 governing groups, making meeting
new friends from all over the world easy. During their
courses, students are urged to take part in a vast range
of events offered both by the university and Toronto
itself, including various sport matches, cultural festivals
and tourist attractions.
The Institute offers its students personalised support,
with in-house Academic Success Officers and EAP
Admission Officers providing practical guidance on
academic and career paths. YUELI also employs a team
of native English-speaking York undergraduate students
called Community Leaders to mentor the language
students, helping them expand their social circles and
allowing them to practice communicating at the same
time. Furthermore, a Student Services Coordinator
assists with accommodation and extracurricular queries,
while a team of Student Registration Coordinators
operate the front desk and serve students in a wide
variety of languages.
YUELI is also broadening its programme offers outside
of York University. With considerable experience in
joint university partnerships (with York’s Business, Law,
Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Studies, Fine
Arts and Education faculties), YUELI has shifted part
of its programme development to proposals for local
corporate and institutional clients. One such example
is a partnership with the Toronto District School Board
(TDSB) and the Education University of Hong Kong
(EUHK), which is a customised immersion programme
that caters to the specific needs of developing educators
from EUHK, with a goal to deepen their understanding
of Canadian culture. A graduate of the programme,
Vincent Fonte, commented that the programme had
“enhanced my learning, not only as a teacher but as a
student learning about Canada, as well.”
With recent reports touting Canada as the second-
best destination (after the U.S.) for internships, YUELI
has moved quickly to assemble semester-abroad
programmes for international university students
interested in the language training and Canadian
employment placement combination. The addition
of internships to YUELI’s already robust number of
pathways sees the Institute offering choices to students
that greatly exceed the programme options in language
training centres of a comparable size, and each of YUELI’s
undergraduate pathway programmes has continued to
see large numbers of students and considerable growth
over 2018 registrations.
But YUELI’s 2018-19 achievements go well beyond simply
filling classrooms. As part of York University’s School of
Continuing Studies, YUELI has implemented department-
wide the DestinyOne enrolment management system,
ensuring faster customer response times. YUELI has
also made considerable efforts to standardise curricula
across its undergraduate/graduate pathways. This
process was underpinned by the Centre for Canadian
Language Benchmarks’ review and assessment of
YUELI programmes and the CCLB’s standardisation
recommendations. In the near future, YUELI will phase
out the CaMLA paper-based test and transfer to CaMLA
online, creating greater global accessibility to students
interested in learning their English placement level in
advance of applying to YUELI.
