The University system in Canada is completely
different to that of the U.K. with Canada requiring
you to take more modules, or ‘classes’ per semester
as well as undertaking more frequent assignments.
For example, as a third year exchange student I was
required to take eight classes throughout the whole
year, four each semester. Due to the incredibly diverse
number of subjects offered at Western (pictured,
above), I was able to take classes in subjects such as
Indigenous Law, Philosophy of Gender and Sexuality,
and Black Women’s History in Canada. These classes
were not separated into lectures and seminars like
is normal in England, but were taught in a seminar
style with a short introductory lecture as class sizes
are much smaller. Student participation is more of a
focus in Canada, with participation being graded in
most classes. Although they were different from what
I had previously experienced at university in England, I
loved the small class sizes and participation, it helped
me make friends easily which was extremely useful.
