For the second year running, iStudy has recognised the York University English Language
Institute (YUELI) as the top language school in North America.
The iStudy award comes on the heels of another busy
and productive year for the Institute, one of two units
within York University’s School of Continuing Studies.
In keeping with its mandate to further diversify its
student base, YUELI, already the largest public English
Language Institute in Canada, is in the process of
developing new international markets by expanding
its recruitment team and by adding a multitude of
agreements to its partnership portfolio. These steps
will both broaden and deepen YUELI’s reach in priority
markets all around the globe.
With over 3,500 enrolments from more than 50
countries annually, YUELI’s student demographic
reflects Toronto’s own diverse and eclectic nature. This
robust multicultural dynamic extends to the staff and
instructors at YUELI as well, who speak a combined
total of over 30 languages. In addition, 100% of the
YUELI’s core instructors hold a Master’s or PhD degree,
one of many reasons for the exceptional quality of
teaching there.
YUELI offers a wide variety of flexible programmes. From
absolute beginner to PhD-ready proficiency, The Institute
serves learners of all levels. Director Isaac Garcia-Sitton
commented that “YUELI is internationally renowned for
its English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes,
which go above and beyond teaching the core language
proficiency components of reading, speaking, writing
and listening; by imparting intercultural communication
skills that are crucial for our students’ flourish in our
globalised society.” In addition to pathways and academic
preparation programmes, custom-designed offerings
are available to meet the needs of special groups. As a
testament to the effectiveness of their EAP programmes,
YUELI’s graduates outperform other international
students at York in average GPA, by +0.19 points;
retention rate, by +18%; and graduation rate, by +14% – a
phenomenon that Garcia-Sitton has coined as the “YUELI
Effect”.
Due to unprecedented growth in recent years, the
School of Continuing Studies will have a new building of
its own added to York University’s Keele campus. Set to
open in 2021, the state-of-the-art structure will include
modern classrooms, social spaces, student lounges and
many other facilities and resources, further building
on YUELI’s status among the top English Language
Institutes in North America.
