Canada is known for its harsh winter. Whilst it was
not a surprise to me, nothing can really prepare
you for just how cold it feels. When you slip down
the campus hill for the seventh time that week,
you haven’t seen the sun in four days through the
snow clouds and your hair freezes on the way to a
lecture, it can all get a bit too much.
WEATHER CONDITIONS
Top Tip:
Ask parents/family/friends
to buy you winter clothes for your
birthday or Christmas, or as a going
away present, because winter clothes
can be very expensive. My other
top tip is to prepare, don’t skimp on
snow boots and a winter coat – ask
Canadians for their advice so you get
the best and feel protected. Make sure
when the weather breaks and the sun
shines, or the temperature rises above
0, that you get outside and go for a
walk or just stand outside, because
when the cold whether keeps you
inside you lack vital fresh air.
I always thought I was a fiercely independent
person who didn’t need to rely on family too
much, but studying abroad made me miss
my family and friends more than ever before.
This is made even worse by the time difference
as it makes it difficult to talk with family
and friends.
BEING FAR AWAY FROM FAMILY
Top Tip:
Wake up early or stay up
late to FaceTime your friends and
family at a time that’s convenient for
them. You might want to sleep but
talking to friends and family will do
you the world of good. Put pictures
of family and friends around your
room. Remember why you wanted
to go abroad and remind yourself
you’re having an incredible experience
and that you will see everyone again
soon. Ask family and friends to send
you those foods you miss the most
from home.
