How do you organise the placement
programme?
The CHP Programme is very different in the way we
approach students. I’ve spoken in-depth with many
students during my career about how an ideal clinical
work experience should be organised. That is why I
focused on the most crucial aspects: knowing as much
as possible in advance about where your experience
will take place, and who will be leading it.
As our student, you know all about every specialised
centre, typical patient cases, methods and procedures,
and about every mentor you will meet, even before
you apply. And today, we cooperate with 80 mentors
across 18 specialties. Your mentors can be top
neurosurgeons, cardiologists, emergency doctors,
physicists in nuclear medicine, radiologists, nurses,
anaesthetists, pulmonology physical therapists, and
many others.
I also consider the preparatory phase as being essential
to any experience abroad. That is the reason why we
created study materials for every specialty. With the
same idea in mind, we put together online guides
to help students understand the rules of conduct
in a hospital environment and how to behave in the
operating rooms.
Another thing that makes the CHP Programme unique
is that we are based directly in the hospital, meeting
everybody daily. I recruited people who are part of our
study programme, and I check the experience students
are getting. Importantly, there is no communication
gap between the management of the study
programme and our students and mentors.
What are the benefits you believe
students will receive by partaking
in a placement with the CHP
Programme?
First of all, as a student who completed the CHP
Programme, you are sure of what you want to do
regarding your future career. You know what it is like
to be part of a healthcare professionals’ team and how
it affects your life. You have enough information to
go deeper into patient cases and treatment methods
and procedures that you have observed. You expand
the knowledge needed to set even more precise and
more explicit goals in terms of your future education
and career. You also gain inspiration on what to look
up further and where you need to dedicate more
focus. You can make conclusions and comparisons of
the pros and cons of different healthcare systems and
how your life will look like once becoming a healthcare
professional. Secondly, you meet like-minded people
from all around the globe, and with this experience
abroad you also grow as a human being.
Finally, you have a chance to gain personal
recommendations, being supported during your time
in one of the most beautiful cities in the world by the
CHP Programme team 24/7. Another advantage is
access to the community where news, job positions,
and professional internship and research positions will
be shared.
What are the requirements to
gain a placement with the CHP
Programme?
The CHP Programme is open for all English speaking
students who are at least 17 years old. Our students can
be in college or studying medicine or nursing in their final
years at university. What we emphasize is the student’s
motivation, goals, and expectations once evaluating the
application and the student’s background. This way, it
is quite easy to pick the right specialty experience for
everyone. As our students usually shadow their mentors
individually, the mentoring team adjusts to the level of
knowledge of the student.
