Why are the placements held in
University Hospital in Motol?
The University Hospital in Motol is the biggest hospital
in Central Europe. It is based in the capital of the
Czech Republic, Prague. It has the highest standards
of care – especially in paediatric specialties – and is
the best place for a child to be admitted. This hospital
is exceptional as well because of the quality of various
specialised centres that enable interdepartmental
cooperation. You can observe so many rare cases that
most professionals would never come across during
their whole professional career.
But the most significant asset are the people working
here – from the hospital’s top management in the
2nd Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University to
the mentors. Without their support and care, the CHP
Programme wouldn’t be successful. I have never seen
such a determination and willingness to share the
knowledge and teach young, dedicated people in my
whole life. It is a pure joy to be around these healthcare
professionals. It is a real pleasure to learn from them
because they genuinely lead by example
What are the common challenges
of experiencing foreign medical
industries?
In general, travelling abroad to a different country
you’ve probably never been to is a challenge itself.
Even while having some experience, a few things are
country-specific, and you need to think about the
context of the healthcare system and the conditions
of the provided care. To give an example, we have an
opt-out system of organ donations, a public system of
healthcare, and many specifics that are influencing the
healthcare professionals’ jobs. That is why we tend to
prepare our students before their arrival as much as we
can through our web application and online materials.
Another thing is the structure and organisation of the
experience in a foreign medical industry, so you need
to have as much practical information as possible.
What areas of medicine can your
interns gain experience in?
We do not only distinguish between the medical,
nursing, dental, paramedical, or physical therapy fields.
We offer 18 different specialties, and we are about to
open new ones. Students pick their preferences in
the application process so it can be anything from
anaesthesiology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery,
ER, neurosurgery, ENT and head and neck surgery,
Children Heart Centre, obs, and gynae to pulmonology
and many other specialties.
As a student, you have an overview of all the people
in the mentoring team, their position, why they do the
job of healthcare professionals, and how their typical
day at work looks like so you are certain about what
to expect and prepare questions ahead. Apart from
the shadowing in the specialty, we organise afternoon
tutorials as patient case studies and excursions to
various specialised centres within the hospital. These
activities help our students to unlock the potential of
other specialties. You can then better understand the
context of the treatment to see how complex it is.
