What was your motivation to do a
hospital placement abroad?
To build life changing relationships and be part of a
sophisticated medical team.
How did you prepare for your
experience?
The CHP System provided us with all the necessary
information and specialty study materials. Also, some
of the doctors in the CHP recommended very useful
topics and websites to read during the placement.
What were the most interesting/
definitive moments of your
placement?
This is the most difficult question to answer because
literally every single day was a remarkable and
interesting day! I have so many stories I could share,
but I will pick my favourite from each week of my
placement:
Week One – Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation &
Intensive Care Medicine
I was lucky to start my rotation with Dr. Radim Kukla
who, as well as being a great senior doctor, has a great
personality and sense of humour. We talked about
several topics as if we were old friends, which made me
feel part of the anaesthesiology team from day one.
Week Two – Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging
My perspective about radiology changed when I met
Dr. Martin Kočí who is a very motivated, young clinician
and researcher. He let me perform ultrasounds on
patients and explain how to report findings. Moreover,
we used to drink coffee from the hospital café (Café
Motol) and talk about our very interesting case report,
which he let me participate in.
Week Three – ENT & Head and Neck Surgery
ENT is a whole different story. I enjoyed every second
of it and I hope I can come back in the future to spend
at least one month in the department. I want to say
a big thank you to Dr. Jan Lazák who invited me into
his biggest ever surgery, which involved cutting the
patient’s face and neck open like a book to extract
tumours. I also want to say a huge thank you to Dr.
Štěpán Novák who took me into cochlear implantation
surgery and was always by my side to explain what
was going on. Finally, I will never forget Dr. Simona
Maléřová who let me practice ENT examination and
performed nasoendoscopy on me, which was certainly
memorable!
Week Four – Nuclear Medicine
I was lucky that I did nuclear medicine in my last
week as it was a more relaxed department and I did
not have to wait around to scrub in. Instead, I had the
opportunity to learn from the intelligent technician
Mr. Jakub Suchánek who was not only a smart teacher,
but also very open to approach and chat with. To
make it even more interesting, Dr. Christo Cheriyan
let me solve several medical cases on my own. He also
taught me several lessons about topics I had learned
in my university radiology course, but this time with
full understanding and on real patient cases, which
made it easier to grasp. We also shared our passions
for travelling and exploring the world. My last day
was very remarkable because it coincided with Mr.
Jakub’s birthday. We had cakes, coffees and wonderful
conversation in the hospital café.
