Underwater Africa offers volunteers the chance to make
a positive impact on Mozambique’s fragile coastlines
through hands-on conservation work. Volunteers are
provided with an exciting opportunity to assist in the
rehabilitation of the coasts damaged habitats, and
can examine how its incredible ecosystems respond
to protection. In order to combat this crucial issue, the
programme focuses on community, education and
sustainable fishing practices, as well as alternative
livelihood initiatives that allow a future of protected
marine life to be built. Surrounded by the undeniable
beauty of Mozambique, volunteers are able to witness
two iconic species of playful dolphins, an abundance of
marine turtles and much more in their natural habitat.
The judges are particularly impressed with Underwater
Africa’s world leading research on the diversity, habitat
use and movement patterns of sharks, as they work with
scientists to examine the lives of these misunderstood
creatures. Volunteers also have a pivotal role to play in the
marine conservation, accompanying scientists on four
research dives a week. Collecting this valuable data and
actively teaching local communities ensures the diverse
biosphere of the Tofo Bay is monitored and the health of
the reef is strengthened. With additional activities such
as surfing and boating on the estuary, volunteers gain a
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
